How do you know if your electrician is licensed by your state?

When you are hiring an electrician or anyone in the trades, you want to make sure they are licensed in your state. By hiring someone who is licensed, they are knowledgeable and must meet your states qualifications on projects which keeps your project safe and up to code.

If you have hired an electrician and want to verify their license, you can follow these steps:

  1. Check with Your State’s Licensing Authority:

    • Most states have a licensing board or agency responsible for regulating electricians. You can visit their website or contact them directly to verify the electrician’s license. Commonly, these boards are part of a state’s Department of Labor, Department of Consumer Affairs, or a similar agency.

  2. Use an Online License Lookup Tool:

    • Many state licensing boards provide an online database or search tool where you can input the electrician’s name or license number to check their credentials. Simply search for your state’s electrician license lookup (e.g., “Arizona electrician license lookup”). For Arizona, you can use this website to confirm a license: Home | Arizona Registrar of Contractors.

  3. Ask the Electrician for Their License Number:

    • A licensed electrician should be able to provide their license number upon request. You can then use this number to verify their credentials with the state licensing board or online search tool.

  4. Verify the License’s Status and Expiry Date:

    • When checking the license, ensure it’s both active and up to date. Some electricians might have expired or inactive licenses, which could affect their ability to legally work in your state.

  5. Look for Additional Certifications:

    • In addition to a state license, electricians may have certifications from national organizations like the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) or the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). While these are not state licenses, they indicate a high level of professional training.
